My sister who is 25 started getting symptoms of ulcerative colitis shortly after giving birth to twins. She has diarhea, cramping, bleeding, really bad canker sores, and an acne-like rash on her face. She was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis and as of right now the only thing that makes the symptoms go away are steriods. Does anyone who has this or knows about this have any suggestions as to what she should eat, or not eat. Has anyone had this and taken a medicine that worked, and if so, what was it? Please help me with giving her some suggestions or advice. She is really miserable. Thank you!

I would first suggest that your sister see a GI specialist, which I’m assuming she’s already done.

Steroid therapy is a fairly common treatment and many times the round of steriods can take care of the problem. But it may recur later on.

I have also taken care of patients who were put on TPN during a flare up, usually for a few weeks. TPN is essentially IV food, during which time the patient takes nothing by mouth. The body’s nutritional needs are met through the TPN. This allows the intestines to rest and heal, then gradually food is introduced until the patient is able to go back to a regular diet.

In severe cases, surgery is indicated, but at your sister’s age, hopefully the non-surgical interventions can work.

Talking with a nutritionist would be a good idea as well. There are some foods that can trigger a flare up.

    Good luck!
