My 2 yr old. pug haves colitis so i have to put him on a bland diet, Today i bought him chicken, rice, carrots and cottage cheese, This will be my first time doing this?
Do you have to mix dog food w/ it?
Is there any homemade dog treats that i can make for him?
they said no to buy dog treats, is there anything i can make for him?
Any advise of this bland diet??
Thanks, Misty

If your dog has colitis, I HIGHLY recommend a raw diet.
About a year ago our hospital started recommending raw diets to those patients who suffer from colitis and wouldn’t you know they made a 100% turn-around! The results have been OUTSTANDING! Especially when they add in probiotics!
However, since you bought the goodies to make a bland diet I will answer your original question. I can absolutely tell you the bland diet you are preparing should not be used long-term. It is not nutricinally balanced. If you wanted to keep him on your own bland diet you need to supplement (multi-vitamin, salmon oil, flaxseed oil, pro-biotics) so your dog gets everything he needs.
You can boil up the chicken (or hamburg) WITH the rice. Once the meat/rice is finished boiling, drain out the water, and put it in his dog bowl. It is then you can add in a tablespoon of the plain/non-fat cottage cheese (or yogurt).
Use the carrots as treats, no need to add them into the food. And do NOT add in dog food!

I would leave out the cottage cheese,. Dogs do not digest cow’s milk well at all, and may aggravate the colitis by causing diarrhea.
Edit: regarding giving the cherry tomato as a treat later ( see below) - tomatos are acidic and contain seeds which can aggravate colitis.

I would stick with boiled chicken and white rice for now. Once your dogs system gets back in order then slowly start adding high quality kibble or go raw. NO treats. Hold out a few tiny pieces of cooked chicken if you need to keep training rewards available. Good luck

raw diet is best for colitis, but if you cant handle that then boiled chicken or beef make sure you rinse it off after done cooking then mix with brown rice and add a veggie just alternate them to get proper nutrition I also recommend to add bone meal do not mix with dog food. once you have the colitis under control then you can slowly introduce him back to kibble but you should change the kibble to a more natural one that can help you little guy, I know wysong, eagle pack, solid gold (and theres more) that can help the situation ( don’t use carrots while he is having a issue carrots are a very hard veggie to digest) as for a treat just try giving him a cherry tomato or something on that order if the dog refuses it then hes not hungry!!

I’m assuming that the ingredients you purchased were what your vet recommended. Just cook (but not the cottage cheese) and mix them together. The chicken would make a good treat, as would the carrots. Most dogs like both of these. If you have other questions about the diet, give your vet a call. They would rather hear from you now than in a week or a month when your baby’s really sick because you didn’t understand the instructions.
Good luck!!
