Ask your vet what you can do, that will probable help

Have you tried adding plain canned pumpkin to her diet? A small dog would get a heaping teaspoon 3 times a day (Tablespoon for large dog). Most dogs like the taste and will eat it readily. Adding fiber can be very beneficial to a dog with colitis. Also feeding a hypo-allergenic food and not giving treats or table scraps is important. Since your vet has decided treat your dog with antibiotics longterm which destroy good bacteria right along with the bad, I would imagine that you should be supplementing with a beneficial bacteria. I don’t know if yogurt would cause a problem with your dog having colitis so I would go with a product called Benebac which is sold at Petsmart and keep him on the beneficial bacteria. You can also get powdered beneficial bacteria at healthfood stores. The ones that are kept refrigerated are best.

What about trying probiotics? http://www.Natren.com makes one for dogs called Caninedophilus.

My 7 year old shar-pei has suffered with IBD for almost 5 years now. We have done the various medications to calm down her “flare-ups” and I used pumpkin on top of her food (which seemed to help for a while). Most recently, following some internet research as I did not want to give in to daily prednisone (sp?) dosages for the rest of her life, I began giving my dog daily dosages of glutamine, milk thistle, probotics and omega 3’s. Since Sept 08 she has been very stable. A couple times she has had semi loose stools and vommited bile on occasion (nothing in comparison to what it was and the issue goes away within a day or so as it used to linger for weeks!). I also use pepcid AC and allergy medication (shar-peis are very sensative to allergans and can lead to IBD flare ups). Just my experiences!
    Best of Luck!
